The third annual Asheville Regional Airport Runway 5k is back by popular demand!
This year’s Runway 5k will take over the entire length of the AVL runway — all 8,001 feet of it — and we expect more than 1,000 runners to be cleared for take-off!
How do we offer a race on an active runway? Well ... it isn't easy, but it is really fun! We search for a window of time in-between scheduled commercial flights, and go from there. There is a slight chance that on race day, if the commercial flight schedule changes, the race route will also change... but no worries, because we have an awesome alternate route planned! (Still partially on the airfield and also within view of the runway in a secured area of the airport.)
Mark your calendars for the big day — Saturday, September 21, with a start time targeted between 8:40 - 8:50am, depending on commercial flight schedules.
$25 Early registration price in effect through August 9 $30 Price August 10 - September 19
$40 Walk-up registration fee September 20-21
Are you part of an organization that has a group of ten or more that would like to run together? We offer discounted group rates for non-profits, organizations and civic groups. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to obtain pricing and a group registration code.
A NOTE ABOUT T-SHIRTS: A total of 800 t-shirts were ordered, and will be distributed to late registrants on a first-come-first-served basis.
Registration is limited to 1,200 runners. (Please note that due to the need to use the runway in-between scheduled flights, there is a time limit to be on the runway. Walkers/slow runners may not be allowed to complete the full 5K distance - but will still enjoy the thrill of the runway and get a great t-shirt, too! See our course map for details.)
In addition, we’re proud to give back to the community and support aviation education with all proceeds from the event. Specifically, all proceeds will support the WNC Air Museum, the WNC Pilots Association Scholarship Fund, and to help fund the development of a traveling aviation-themed educational exhibit for kids.
• Want to ride in a plane? The Western North Carolina Pilot’s Association will be conducting “leaf tours,” and for a minimal donation to their scholarship fund ($40 for adults, $15 for children), you can take a 15 minute fly-about.
• Prizes, prizes, prizes — There are great prizes for winners in each category, as well as one adult racer will be RANDOMLY drawn to win FREE airfare!
Due to federal budget freezes, there will not be an Aviation Day festival this year as military display aircraft are unavailable. However, be sure to mark your calendar for the October 31 - November 1 B-17 Aluminum Overcast display, tour and rides taking place at the airport, and sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association. More information will be available soon.
• FREE parking at Asheville Regional Airport - lower lot, clearly identified as event parking, and overflow parking nearby. Special event attendants will direct. Enter at the traffic light entrance (watch for signs) - parking immediately on the left before you loop in front of the terminal.
• We ask that you walk to the race site (follow the flagged walking route). We will also have a courtesy shuttle bus during the duration of the event for those who cannot walk to and from the event site.
