Asheville Regional Airport Opens New Partial Baggage Claim April 17

Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) will open its new partial baggage claim on April 17, 2027, advancing the airport’s ongoing transformation through the AVL Forward project and enhancing the arrival experience for passengers.

Beginning with the first arriving flight on April 17, all passengers needing baggage claim services will be directed to the new baggage claim facility. Upon arrival, passengers will deplane at the North Concourse, proceed down into the ticket lobby, and follow a clearly marked outdoor passenger pathway leading to the new baggage claim.

The opening also brings the relocation of the airport’s Guest Services Center, which will begin serving passengers in the new baggage claim facility the same day. The legacy baggage claim area will close following the final arriving flight on April 16, concluding its service after decades of operation.

This initial opening represents a partial delivery of the full baggage claim project. The remaining portion of the expanded baggage claim facility is expected to open in summer 2027 and will ultimately include three baggage carousels. The new facility and systems will increase AVL’s capacity to handle baggage, allowing for more efficient processing during periods of multiple, larger aircraft arrivals.

“The first phase of our new baggage claim is another major step forward in delivering a modern, efficient airport experience for our passengers,” said Lew Bleiweis, President & CEO of Asheville Regional Airport. “As passenger volumes continue to grow, these improvements ensure AVL is prepared to meet demand while maintaining the high level of service our community and visitors expect.”

The new baggage claim is part of the broader AVL Forward project, a comprehensive effort to modernize and expand the airport’s terminal and supporting infrastructure. The project launched in 2019, broke ground on August 11, 2023, and has since reached several key milestones, including the commissioning of the Checked Baggage Inspection System (CBIS) in June 2025, the opening of the North Ticket Lobby on June 11, 2025, and the debut of the new TSA security checkpoint and North Concourse on June 25, 2025. Phase 2 construction began on October 22, 2025.

Looking ahead, the next milestone will occur in May 2026 with the opening of new rental car counters. The project is expected to be completed at the end of 2027 – early 2028.
When complete, the new terminal will be 335,000 square feet, creating a more spacious and efficient environment for travelers. Additionally, a new Air Traffic Control Tower is nearing completion and is expected to be commissioned in early summer 2026.

As construction progresses, AVL encourages passengers to allow extra time when navigating the terminal. For more information about the AVL Forward project, visit flyavl.com/AVL_forward

Asheville Regional Airport Begins Call to Artists for AVL Forward Permanent Public Art Program

FLETCHER, N.C. — Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) has launched its Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for a permanent public art program as part of AVL Forward, the airport’s terminal modernization project.

The RFQ invites artists and artist-led teams nationwide to submit qualifications for two large-scale, permanent installations in the new terminal. The works will anchor key spaces and reflect the natural beauty, culture, and creative spirit of Western North Carolina.

“This is an opportunity to bring world-class art into the heart of our airport,” said Lew Bleiweis, President and CEO of Asheville Regional Airport. “AVL has always aimed to reflect the region it serves, and this program deepens that commitment.”

The initiative builds on AVL’s existing arts programs, including Art in the Airport and Music in the Airport, and expands the airport’s approach to placemaking by integrating art directly into the new terminal design.

The new terminal design is guided by the concept of a modern gateway rooted in natural beauty. Selected artworks will support this vision and create a strong sense of arrival.

Two installation sites have been identified:
•    The terminal’s grand hall at the main entrance
•    The airside central concessions area

Submissions are open now on CallForEntry.org and are due by June 22, 2026. Finalists will be invited to submit proposals, with installations expected ahead of the terminal’s completion in 2028.

Asheville Regional Airport Posts Second-Highest Year in History with 2.24 Million Passengers in 2025

FLETCHER, NC — Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) served 2,240,877 million passengers in 2025, marking the second-busiest year of passenger utilization in the airport’s history. This achievement underscores the region’s continued demand for air travel and highlights AVL as a vital and resilient gateway to western North Carolina.

Despite significant challenges, including impacts from Hurricane Helene and ongoing terminal construction, AVL demonstrated remarkable resilience and sustained passenger growth.

“Reaching 2.24 million passengers in 2025 in the wake of unexpected impacts and major construction is a tremendous accomplishment,” said Lew Bleiweis, President & CEO of the Greater Asheville Regional Airport Authority. “The region has moved forward with resilience and so has its airport. This performance reflects the strength of our community’s support, the confidence of our airline partners, and the region’s continued appeal as both a destination and a place to live and work.”

AVL continues to be a critical economic driver for western North Carolina, supporting jobs, visitor spending, and broader regional growth. Growth across AVL’s air service network remained strong throughout the year, highlighted by the addition of new nonstop routes and more airline seats for sale to existing routes . Looking ahead into 2026, travelers will see increased frequencies and capacity to key markets served by five airlines: Allegiant, American, Delta, Sun Country and United.

Answers

One word:  growth.

The airport has seen remarkable growth for the past seven years and has been one of the fastest-growing airports in the country for most of those years.  AVL is the gateway to and from western North Carolina, a place more and more people call home or want to visit.  We are literally bursting at the seams.  It’s time for more space, for now and for the future.

Blast off to a 4.5-year journey

We officially broke ground in August 2023, and we are projecting to complete the project within 4.5 years (with final touches still underway after we open).  This is a phased project, so you will enjoy much of the new terminal much sooner, like the new ticket counter lobby that opened on June 11, 2025 and the new North Concourse that opened on June 25, 2025.  Check out our interactive timeline for more details.

Travel is about adventure, right?

We know that it feels like a blast from the past to walk outside on the tarmac, brave the elements, and make your way to a set of air stairs to board your plane.  Rest assured, outside "ground boarding" is only necessary during construction.  We don’t have room right now for all gates to utilize boarding bridges but by the end of the AVL Forward project, all gates will have new jet bridges.  Thanks for bearing with us and tapping into your adventurous spirit!

We're over-the-moon about what's coming.

Here are a few examples:

  • A lovely, airy food, beverage and retail plaza with room to orbit and lots of local options available (stay tuned – more to come about this!).
  • We can't wait to install our living wall!  It’s a way to bring our beautiful outdoors indoors.
  • The bathroom situation is stellar:  bright, comfortable restrooms with changing tables for babies as well as appropriate space for aging or differently-abled travel companions, inclusive options and ... yes ... even an indoor pet relief area for traveling animals.
  • Dedicated rooms where infants can be fed or nursing mothers can pump will be located near the gate areas.
  • And ART!  We’ll have multiple mini-galleries in the airport where local art displays will rotate.  And for the first time in our history, we will commission large-scale art pieces for display in key locations.  We are WNC, after all.  Art is a huge part of our sense of place.
  • The view! Floor-to-ceiling windows will provide great views of the runway and the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains while you wait on your flight.
  • A variety of comfortable and stylish seating options with electronic charging capabilities will be available throughout the terminal.
  • There’s so much more – we’ll add to this list as more details become available.

Our mission:  ready for the future

This project is about meeting our space needs now and making sure we’ve planned for potential growth in the future.  While we can’t predict exactly what will happen, we do believe that growth will continue in our region and at AVL.  And we will be ready.

Mission Control - financing the biggest project in AVL's history

This major approximately $400 million project is being funded by government bonds, federal and state grants (entitlement and discretionary), and airport operating funds.  Our operating funds come from users of the airport:  airlines, rental car companies, other tenants of the airport, advertisers, and passengers (when they pay to utilize airport services, such as parking).

*Note:  no tax dollars are used to fund airport capital projects or operations.

A separate mission:  Project Parking

AVL Forward is solely about building a new terminal.  However, we have our eye on parking, as well.  Simultaneously in the first year of this project, we will be building an additional remote shuttle lot south of the airport (across from the WNC Ag Center).  And our master plan calls for a focus on a second parking garage, when the time is right.  Stay tuned.

It's a space adventure!

Good news!  More space is here! Our new ticket lobby opened on June 11, 2025 and the new North Concourse and new TSA security check point opened on June 25, 2025!

And for a while, you may still be walking outside to get on and off aircraft.  Just part of the adventure, right?

Phase 2 is officially underway! Passengers will now experience a new set of journey options as they move through the terminal. Depending on your destination this may include a journey outside the main buildings and through a covered pathway. To support this transition, new Passenger Journey Maps for both departing and arriving passengers have been created to clearly guide travelers to ticketing, baggage claim, and other key destinations around the airport with ease and confidence. These maps are available on our website and throughout the ground level of the terminal.

More good news! Even more space is coming!

We’ll pamper you from time to time, surprising you with pop-up events with goodies and smiles.  We promise to keep you informed and give you ways to communicate with us if you have ideas about how we can make this process more comfortable for you.

Thanks for your patience and keep cheering for AVL.  We’re your airport, and in just a few short years, it’ll be an out-of-this-world passenger experience every day.
