Asheville Regional Airport is commissioning two permanent sculptural pieces for its new terminal and artists are invited to dream big. From soaring ceiling installations to grounded works inspired by our region, these new pieces will help travelers feel the spirit of Western North Carolina the moment they arrive.
Artists and artist-led teams can submit qualifications beginning April 1, 2026. This is the first step toward selection. The Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is open to U.S. artists and local WNC artists will be given preference and are strongly encouraged to apply. The official RFQ application may be accessed through CallForEntry.org.

Submitted Questions
I am a photographer/muralist/painter, etc. Can I still apply?
We encourage all artists to apply. The designated locations are not flat walls, but we encourage artists to think outside of the box on how a final installation could appear in the space.
For the portfolio of images, are composite images (one JPG showing 2-3 angles/detail shots) acceptable for each project? Or does the call specifically want only one single image per project?
The composite images are acceptable for the submission.
Do all my uploaded images need to have been installed in a location similar in scale, like the airport? Some of these images I wish to submit were taken recently and have not yet been installed or sold. Is this requirement necessary?
Full Question: After reading the application carefully, I took pause on this statement, "upload a minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 jpeg images of installed past work of similar scope, scale, and budget." Could you be more specific about what you require here? For example, do all my images need to have been installed in a location similar in scale, like the airport? For other installations I have completed, the size of the space dictated the final dimensions or the location dictated the theme. Some of these images I wish to submit were taken recently and have not yet been installed or sold. Is this requirement necessary?
Uploading a minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 jpeg images of installed past work of similar scope, scale, and budget is a necessary requirement, as this project will requires a certain level of experience with public art display. Your past work does not need to be displayed in another airport, more likely we expect to see it another public space or forum. The installation site is not necessarily a flat wall, so showing examples of your work as public art that was on display in an out of the box format will be better suited for this type of project.
What size jpegs would you prefer to receive?
The question of image size, I believe Café has a maximum jpeg size that uploads cannot exceed. If you have an issue when uploading, please reach out to their customer service team, they are very helpful and can answer any technical questions related to the application.
My current website is under construction and may not be finished in time for submitting my application. Is this a necessary requirement or do you wish to see other work that I have done?
Full Question: My current website is under construction and may not be finished in time for submitting my application. Is this a necessary requirement or do you wish to see other work that I have done? Being a freelance photographer, I do not work with other photographers, nor do I have my own gallery at this time, so my references are photographers I've done workshops with or owners of businesses to whom I've sold my work.
If you are interested in submitting photography, framed for wall hanging, I would also suggest considering applying for our Art in the Airport program. That program is for our rotating exhibits in our art gallery locations in the terminal and is for local WNC artists. We post application information and deadlines on our Art and Music page at flyavl.com/artintheairport.
Can you please send me the dimensions of the space, and the allowable overhead clearance?
The information about the dimensions of the space is available on the call description page here: CaFÉ – please review “details and space dimensions” section underneath the project timeline to see the specifications for both locations. There is also a link in the upper right corner of the same page that says, “View Site Details” with a PDF of the floor plan noting ceiling heights and limitations, you may also access it directly here: AVL-Art-Locations-RFQ.
I understand the RFQ is focused on U.S.-based artists or artist-led teams. Could a team led by an eligible U.S.-based collaborator could include a European company as the design / fabrication partner?
Full question: I understand the RFQ is focused on U.S.-based artists or artist-led teams. Could a team led by an eligible U.S.-based collaborator could include a European company as the design / fabrication partner, or whether international production would not fit your requirements?
Yes, an eligible U.S. based artist or team could work with or collaborate with vendors not located in the U.S.
What is the installation timeline?
The project timeline, including installation, is listed on our questions page here: AVL FORWARD ART | Asheville Regional Airport and in the RFQ description here: CaFÉ . The contracting process is expected to be completed by February 26, 2027, then production can begin. The completed install is scheduled between August- September 2027. That means there is roughly 6 months for project completion. The actual timeframe a piece could begin to be assembled/installed on site at the airport will depend on the specific project. That recommendation would take place during the proposal process for finalists.
