Runway 5k

Saturday, September 20 at AVL

The 4th annual Asheville Regional Airport Runway 5k is back by popular demand!

This year’s Runway 5k will take over the entire length of the AVL runway — all 8,001 feet of it — and we expect more than 1,000 runners to be cleared for take-off!

How do we offer a race on an active runway?  Well ... it isn't easy, but it is really fun!  We search for a window of time in-between scheduled commercial flights, and go from there.  There is a slight chance that on race day, if the commercial flight schedule changes, the race route will also change... but no worries, because we have an awesome alternate route planned!  (Still partially on the airfield and also within view of the runway in a secured area of the airport.)

Mark your calendars for the big day — Saturday, September 20, with a start time targeted between 8:30 - 9am, depending on commercial flight schedules.

PRICE:

Early registration price in effect through August 8

Price August 9 - September 18

Walk-up registration fee September 19-20

Are you part of an organization that has a group of ten or more that would like to run together?  We offer discounted group rates for non-profits, organizations and civic groups.  Please contact pr@flyavl.com to obtain pricing and a group registration code.

A NOTE ABOUT T-SHIRTSA total of 800  t-shirts were ordered, and will be distributed to late registrants on a first-come-first-served basis.

6:45am  - Event site opens for 5k runners
8:30am - Runway 5k begins

A few important details about the day:

Registration is limited to 1,200 runners.  (Please note that due to the need to use the runway in-between scheduled flights, there is a time limit to be on the runway.  Walkers/slow runners may not be allowed to complete the full 5K distance - but will still enjoy the thrill of the runway and get a great t-shirt, too!  See our course map for details.)

  • In addition, we’re proud to give back to the community and support aviation education with all proceeds from the event.  Specifically, all proceeds will support the WNC Air Museum and the WNC Pilots Association Scholarship Fund.
  • Want to ride in a plane? The Western North Carolina Pilot’s Association will be conducting “leaf tours,” and for a minimal donation to their scholarship fund ($40 for adults, $15 for children), you can take a 15 minute fly-about.
  • Prizes, prizes, prizes — There are great prizes for winners in each category!

We will have aircraft on display, airport equipment (firetrucks, snow sweepers, and other equipment needed to run the airport operations), and a fun, family atmosphere.

Parking

  • Information is coming about parking.  When you register for the race, we will send a racer email with all details you need.

If you have questions about this event, please email us at pr@flyavl.com.
