SMS is broken down into 4 key components

  1. Safety Policy – Established senior management’s commitment to continuously improve safety. Defines the methods, processes, and organization needed to meet goals.
  2. Safety Promotion – Includes training, communication, and other actions to create a positive safety culture within all levels of the work force.
  3. Safety Risk Management (SRM) – Determines the need for, and adequacy of, new or revised risk controls based on the assessment of acceptable risk.
  4. Safety Assurances – Evaluates the continued effectiveness of implemented risk control strategies. Supports the identification of new hazards.

Hazard Reporting

All airport employees can submit an SMS hazard report. These reports will be reviewed by AVL’s SMS Committee to analyze the risk and implement mitigation measures if necessary.

All potentially hazardous conditions, incidents, or occurrences on the movement area, non-movement area, and the Air Operations Area (AOA) that may compromise the safe conduct of operations, and do not require immediate attention should be reported by completing the SMS Hazard Report Form. Forms can be turned in via the following methods below. Reports can be submitted anonymously.
