Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) will host its annual Runway 5K on Saturday, October 7, where runners and walkers will make their way down Taxiway Bravo while planes take off and land on the adjacent runway. All participants must pre-register, and the registration deadline is approaching.
To guarantee a race t-shirt, participants must register no later than 9pm September 26. After that, t-shirts are available while supplies last. Race registration will close October 4.
The Runway 5K, in partnership with Hensel Phelps, Hunter Subaru and Paradies Lagardere, raises funds to support local aviation scholarships administered by both A-B Tech Department of Aviation and the Western North Carolina Pilots Association Educational Foundation.
"This is one of our favorite days of the year," said Tina Kinsey, Vice President of Marketing, Public Relations and Air Service Development. "It's a fantastic way to invite members of our community to the airport to experience the thrill of being close to the airfield, do some serious plane spotting, and enjoy a unique 5K race. You can't get this close to the runway unless you're on an airplane!"
The event will take place on the north end of the airfield, with parking in a nearby area. All participants will be shuttled to the event site, which is in a secure area near the airfield. Three food trucks offering coffee, pastries and smoothies will be at the event, as well as music, merchandise, special photo opportunities and more.
